A lot of things, but for one thing, it’s about teaching Australians the world’s greatest stories, the ABC News has learned.
“One of the things we’re doing is teaching Australians how to talk about their favourite things and that’s been the challenge,” ABC Radio’s Chris Mullins said.
“We’ve had a lot of conversations about what the best thing about teaching ABC’s Australia Story is and I think there’s a lot to be said for that.”
In fact, there’s something about teaching a story that you don’t necessarily have to be a journalist to enjoy.
The ABC’s story of the Australian Story was based on the work of a number of writers, from the late Peter Jennings to John Howard to the late, great David Marr.
It was told through the eyes of those who wrote it, and was told in such a way that you could listen to it and say, “Wow, I’ve never heard this before”.
The ABC has been working hard to bring the ABC Story to a broader audience in a variety of ways.
Here are a few highlights from our conversation.
We’ve seen the ABC launch a new website for Australians to read stories, as well as a podcast.
This new website is being launched in October, and will feature content that’s not available elsewhere, including interviews with the authors of the stories, and an interview with a storyteller.
ABC News Breakfast’s Julia Crawford said the ABC is doing this to help people find stories they may not have heard about before.
“So if you’ve been following stories on the ABC, and you haven’t had a chance to read them, then this is a great opportunity to start,” she said.
ABC Radio Canberra’s Jon Faine said that the storytellers on the show, which was aired on ABC Radio NT, would get to meet with the people who wrote the stories.
“The Australian Story has been told by a range of different people in different ways, so it’s a very unique story that’s being told through different means,” he said.
It’s also been a time to reflect on some of what we’ve learnt about Australian culture over the years.
ABC TV’s The World Tonight, which ran from January to April this year, featured a conversation with the author of a story.
“I’ve had many conversations about the Australian story, and how it’s important to me, and what the story means to me,” the story told.
It has also featured stories from some of Australia’s best-known journalists, including James O’Brien and Tom Llamas, as part of its Australia Today series.
But while The World Today was a great way to learn more about the ABC story, the conversation with a particular author was a bit more enlightening.
“It’s been very interesting to talk to people who are part of the story, people who have seen the story and seen how it was written and how we’ve changed it,” Ms Crawford said.
And we’re learning a lot more about our own country and the people that make it great.
“In some ways, it can be more challenging to teach Australians than it is to explain what Australia is,” Ms Mullins added.
We’ll have more from the ABC Australia Story team in the weeks ahead.
